There is definitely a place for online learning in the future of education. In fact it is very likely that online learning will continue to grow and at some point replace the traditional education system. There are a number of very good reasons for this but the biggest is cost. A lot of money can be saved if we replace our schools with a system of online education.

The future of Education: Online Education

Online education would seem to have a bright future as more and more people are starting to take advantage of the opportunities that it provides. It used to be that distance learning was considered to be a less effective means of learning than a traditional school, this is no longer the case. Studies have shown that distance learning students actually learn more than there on campus counterparts, in large part because online learning allows students to work at their own pace.

Currently online learning is largely restricted to working adults who need to upgrade their academic credentials but this is likely to change and more and more students choose to get their undergraduate degree online. There are even now high schools that offer online learning, the day may soon come when the traditional classroom completely disappears and all education is done over the internet.

A big part of the reason that online education has become more and more popular is the improving technology. There is much more interaction between online students and their teacher than there ever was in the past. This has certainly enhanced the learning experience and made the internet classroom feel more like a traditional school. This is likely to continue in the future as internet technology allows for even better communication.

As these improvements are made it is likely that more and more degree programs will be made available online. Currently the biggest issue preventing this from happening is that some courses, mainly the sciences require hands on laboratory experience, but as online education keeps shaping the future, these issues should get tackled soon also. Nobody has yet come up with a good way to do that online, but at some point they will.

The biggest factor that makes online education such an appealing prospect for the future of educations is the cost factor. It is much cheaper to offer a course online than it is to do it on campus. One online instructor can teach a course to thousands of students at one time, resulting in massive savings.

The savings will be even larger when we get to the point that all courses can be offered online and there is no need for physical schools. Building and maintaining a school is a major expense, one that can be avoided if all of the students are learning from home.
