The Disadvantages of Studying Online

In this article we will be discussing The Disadvantages of Studying Online. Online degrees have become very popular in recent years, mainly because of all the advantages that they offer. Studying online can be a good way for a working adult to enhance their education and more and more of them are doing just that. However, an online education isn’t for everybody, there are a few disadvantages as well. Most people find that the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages but it is still important to keep them in mind.

The Disadvantages of Studying Online

The biggest disadvantage to studying online is the lack of interaction with your professor. If you get stuck you are pretty much going to be on your own. Although most schools offer tutorial support to help you if you get stuck it really isn’t a substitute for having regular access to your professor. Studying online requires that you be a fairly strong independent learner.

A further problem with not having access to your professor may occur if you plan to continue on with your education and attend grad school. Most post graduate programs require letters of recommendation from your undergrad professors, this will obviously be a problem if you have never met your professor.

There is also no interaction with your fellow students when you are studying online and this can be a disadvantage for a lot of people. The social aspect of university is important to a lot of people, many students meet life long friends while they are at school. This isn’t going to happen if you are studying online. In addition most people find that the support of their classmates can be real help when they are studying, either in the form of mutual support or in helping to solve difficult problems. Again this isn’t going to happen when you are studying online.

An online degree requires that you be really motivated and this is an area in which a lot of people struggle. For a lot of people one of the advantages of an online degree is that it allows them the flexibility to study when it is convenient for them. However this lack of structure can be a disadvantage for a lot of people.

Many students find that they need scheduled classes and need to be told when to do their homework, when you are studying online you won’t get this. An online student needs to be both motivated and disciplined in order to be successful, unfortunately this is a problem for a lot of students.

Although it is becoming less and less common there are still some people who will look down on an online degree. In most career fields this isn’t a problem but there are a few where an online degree may not serve your purposes. The worst for this is the world of academia, it is very unlikely that you will be able to get a job as a university professor with an online degree. In most cases this isn’t a huge disadvantage for an online degree but it is something to keep in mind.
